Chapter Thirty-Six

There. Dan rushed towards the location of the next shot, predicted by his skill assist, just as Jason made contact with the tennis ball. They’d been playing for who knew how long, and Dan was well aware of the fact his stamina was nearing the 50 percent mark. Given his edge over his opponent, what with his magical powers, it was clear Jason was wearing down. Just as Dan had figured, his stamina, honed not only since he’d gotten his magical powers, but also a lifetime of playing soccer, was proving to outshine Jason’s level of physicality. Not to say Jason was entirely unfit. To give the Sophomore credit, they’d had a lot of tough games. Some of the points had been drawn out, with neither player able to hit a winner, and a lot of running around the court as both chased balls, just hitting them best they could, to get them over the net. Add onto that the fact a lot of their games had gone to deuce, and it was no wonder that they’d both been getting more and more exhausted. So evenly were they matched, that the seniors had changed, midway through the match, their original rules. No longer was it a first to four, match. Now, it was a single set to six, to decide the winner, and decide if Dan would be able to practice or not. Currently, it was seeming positive for Dan. He was up, 5 games to 4.

If Dan didn’t know any better, he’d have thought the members of the team were actually enjoying the match more than they let on and had just wanted to see it play out. This thought was further enforced by the timing of when they’d changed the rules. Dan had won 4 matches, as originally demanded, with the match being 4 to 3, in Dan’s favor. However, per tennis rules, they claimed he needed to win by 2. However, thanks to some bad luck in the form of slipping on the clay court, Dan had lost the next game, and Jason had tied it 4 to 4. It was at that moment Ben changed the rules, declaring they should just play the set like normal, a set to six, instead of four. The senior claimed it was because he didn’t want to have to teach Dan the rules for a tiebreaker. But Dan figured it was purely for the entertainment of the team, who seemed surprisingly invested in this showdown.

Dan turned his focus back to the match at hand, his feet pounding on the clay as he rushed towards the location of the ball. His Minor Skill assist was clutch, allowing him to get into a suitable position before the ball actually landed, giving him to time to adjust, react, and return each shot. As far as he could tell, he’d actually been returning a high percentage of the shots being sent towards him. Unfortunately, some of those shots went into the doubles alley, meaning they were out of bounds for the singles match.
